About Us

BC Healthy Communities is a province-wide not-for-profit organization that facilitates the ongoing development of healthy, thriving and resilient communities. We provide a range of resources, programs, funding and fee-for-service offerings that support multi-sectoral groups to collaborate around a shared vision for a common purpose. We work closely with, and have strong partnerships with local governments and health authorities across the province.

We have adopted and adapted the Healthy Communities Approach in our work to support local governments as they create equitable policies that address community health and well-being. The Healthy Communities movement recognizes that 60% of what makes us healthy is determined by our built, social, environmental and economic environments, and helps local governments design these various environments to support maximum health and well-being.

Our Services

We offer a range of services that reflect our interdisciplinary teams expertise in planning, public health, and community engagement. Our service model is not linear – rather, it reflects the continuous process of improving and strengthening community health and well-being through policy and programs.

Our Process

BCHC is different because of our approach. Our interdisciplinary team has a unique vantage point from which to see the interconnections, efficiencies and interrelationships between our health and the way we build our communities. Because of this, we have redesigned traditional planning, policy, and public engagement processes from the bottom up to ensure better impacts and outcomes.

We believe that community members are experts.
Who else would know more about local needs than the people who live, work, and play there? Your knowledge and expertise drive our process towards finding realistic solutions for community-wide issues.

Everyone gets a seat at the table, or two.
We prioritize equity in our approach, making sure that we identify and understand who is not currently represented, why they have been left out, and how to bring them on board. When a wider range of people are involved in the planning process, a wider range of people will be able to benefit from the resulting initiative.
